Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen Vol 1 #115 – Jimmy’s Merman Deathtrap!
Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #115 (October 1968), by Leo Dorfman with Pete Costanza’s art and a Neal Adams cover, is a wild Silver Age tale. Proteus, the Old Man of the Sea, posing as “Captain Bane,” grants Jimmy Olsen merman powers by having him swallowed by a whale (revealed as Jonah’s biblical one) containing a mystical six-sided stone. Proteus uses Jimmy to lure Aquaman into a deathtrap, staging a contest in a desert to pit them against each other. Jimmy, with Aquaman-like abilities, saves ships, but “Superman” (Proteus in disguise) mocks him and seemingly lets Aquaman die. Jimmy’s suspicion grows when “Superman” doesn’t question Aquaman’s “death,” revealing Proteus’ shape-shifting plot. The real Superman arrives, saving Jimmy and a liner from Proteus’ reef trap. A backup story, “The Kid Who Unmasked Superman,” features Duncan Brite stalking the Jimmy Olsen Fan Club to uncover Superman’s identity.
