Superboy Vol 1 #140 – Superboy’s High-Stakes Gambles and Kryptonian Crisis!
Superboy Vol 1 #140 (July 1967), by Leo Dorfman with George Papp’s art, is an action-packed Silver Age issue with two stories. In “The Wizard of Odds!,” gangster and gambling mastermind Lucifer Chancel, aka The Gambler, sets up in Smallville, orchestrating high-stakes betting games based on Superboy’s heroic actions. With his gang—Blackie, Maxie, and The Professor—Chancel plots to destroy the Boy of Steel using Green Kryptonite and a Superboy Robot, but Superboy outwits their schemes, shutting down the gambling ring. In “Beware the Mad Dog of Steel!,” Superboy and Krypto discover a Kryptonian space capsule on the ocean floor containing germ vials. One vial breaks, infecting Krypto with Kryptonian rabies, which he passes to Superboy via a bite, threatening death within 24 hours. Superboy has Krypto break an antidote vial, curing them both, with Jor-El’s foresight revealed in flashbacks.
