Marvel Tales Vol 2 #242 – Spider-Man and Nightcrawler vs. a Circus of Death!
Marvel Tales Vol 2 #242 (reprinting Marvel Team-Up #89), by Chris Claremont and John Romita Sr., is a thrilling crossover. Nightcrawler reunites with Amanda Sefton at Kennedy Airport, spotting Arcade’s 747. Overhearing Arcade argue with Amos Jardine, who hired then ditched him to kill Spider-Man, Nightcrawler investigates. Arcade detects his presence, and Nightcrawler and Amanda stow away in Jardine’s limo to follow him. Jardine, a cruel circus owner who once humiliated Nightcrawler, plans Spider-Man’s death at his Manhattan circus. Nightcrawler impersonates Spider-Man on the high wire to flush out the assassin, Cutthroat, who fires a rocket-dart. Spider-Man, as Peter Parker in the audience, saves Nightcrawler, and they battle Cutthroat amid a chaotic circus stampede. Cutthroat’s sonic and flare attacks stun them, but Spider-Man webs his weapon, causing an explosion that knocks Cutthroat out. Jardine takes Amanda hostage, but Nightcrawler disarms him, and Spider-Man subdues him. They find an Arcade-marked narco-dart on Jardine, hinting at more danger, but Nightcrawler and Amanda leave, exhausted.
