Marvel Tales Vol 2 #208 (reprinting Marvel Team-Up #79), by Chris Claremont and John Romita Sr., is a thrilling tale. On a snowy December 22, Spider-Man rushes to a Daily Bugle Christmas party after losing time at Cissy’s. At the Metropolitan Museum, guard Gus Hovannes is possessed by a mystic amulet, speaking a dead language. At the party, Peter Parker reunites with Mary Jane, but Joe Robertson sends him and Charley Snow to cover museum trouble, with MJ stowing away. A crimson energy beam erupts from the museum. Spider-Man battles slimy tentacles and demons inside, where MJ, wielding a glowing sword, transforms into Red Sonja. They fight demons, but Kulan Gath, the amulet’s sorcerer, attacks. Miscommunication leads Sonja to knock out Spidey, and they’re bound over a Sa’arpool pit, a gateway to the N’Garai dimension. Kulan Gath plans to revive Elder Gods, revealing his soul survived in the amulet for centuries. Spider-Man breaks free, collapses the temple set, and frees Sonja. They confront Kulan Gath outside, where New York’s modernity stuns him. Spidey knocks him out, removes the amulet, and Gus is freed. Sonja vanishes, leaving MJ unconscious. Peter tosses the amulet into the Atlantic, resisting its lure.
