Francis, Brother of the Universe #1 – Saint of Assisi Biography (1980, Marvel Comics)
Francis, Brother of the Universe #1 (January 1980, Marvel Comics), written by Mary Jo Duffy and Roy Gasnick, OFM, with pencils by John Buscema and inks/colors by Marie Severin, is a 48-page Silver Age graphic biography celebrating the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Timed for the 800th anniversary of his birth (1181/1182–1982), this comic details Francis’ journey from a middle-class youth in Assisi, Italy, to a revered mystic and founder of the Franciscans. Born during the Dark Ages, Francis befriends nobles, fights in a war against Perugia, and is imprisoned. A prophetic dream and divine voices lead him to renounce wealth, restore the San Damiano church, and embrace poverty, culminating in his stigmata and sainthood. The wraparound cover by Buscema and Severin, priced at $0.75, adds visual allure. Distributed by Marvel and Paulist Press, it sold over 1 million copies and was translated into eight languages, reaching an estimated 15 million readers.
